Notes from vendor: I acquired the work directly from Phil. During 1972 & 1973 we spent a lot of time together and were very close. This work was painted just prior to leaving Christchurch in 1973. Cans 'Tago Mago' was on the turntable back then. He painted a smaller version at the time and it was submitted for exhibition. There had been recent discoveries on how the legs and arms on the crucified might have bent and not straight. This was of interest to Phil and he had the clipping in his studio. It was a very intense time politically with the French testing in the Pacific and what was happening in the Middle East. The crucifixion was the classic subject Phil returned to explore man's inhumanity to man.
