In the summer of 1913, thirty two year old Maud Sherwood (nee Maud Kimbell) was joyfully painting in the artists' colony of Concarneau, Brittany. Of this happy time, shared with painting companions she wrote:
Subjects simply tumbled over one another…I positively gloated over it all - crowds of Breton women, all in their Breton costumes in lovely brown and blue clothes…were buying, selling, strolling, talking and the sun shone'.
On the Way to Market, Brittany embodies the artist's words. It is the largest Sherwood landscape with figures to be offered at auction.
