Killeen's first paintings were of stereotyped suburban imagery close in spirit and intention to the work of the American Pop artists who brought imagery drawn from mass media into high art. Already in these works Killeen's tendency to detach images from their surroundings in order to present them as signs rather than representative facts can be seen.
