By the 1930s Goldie's reputation in New Zealand was being challenged by a new generation. In Europe, however his paintings met with great acclaim when exhibited at London's Royal Academy and the Paris Salon. Te Wharekauri Tahuna, Ngati Manawa was one of the last tattooed warriors of his generation. When young, he was captured by a Te Arawa war party and taken to Rotorua, where he chose to live after his release.
