Thomas Cass arrived in Lyttelton Harbour in December 1848 and set up camp at what would become known as Cass Bay. In 1851 he became chief surveyor for the Canterbury Association. Kasey Sealy chose to paint the quiet, secluded bay during his recent New Zealand visit.
