James Watkins
About James Watkins
James Watkins was born in the Waikato, in 1985. As a young artist he was inspired by the works of Edward Hopper and Tamara de Lempicka. From 2003 James studied at Auckland's Elam School of Fine Arts. Since 2005 James has been a member of the International Art Centre family, exhibiting his works which sell worldwide.
Speaking of his work James says: "I aspire to make beautiful paintings - taking particular interest in New Zealand's architectural structures - both historical and contemporary. My works pay tribute to the universal symbol of home as a place of heart and hearth, belonging, happy memories and security."
In 2019 James created a stunning new series of works confidently exploring the sophisticated realm of cubism. His solo exhibition in April of that year resulted in further International sales. These paintings saw James transform a tapestry of brilliantly balanced, toned and shaded cubes of colour into stylish landscapes and still-lifes.
His paintings, so full of atmosphere, light and shade are truly intriguing. By retaining and refreshing the palette and essence of earlier works, James constantly presents us with unique and original works of art.
