Important, Early & Rare New Zealand Art Auction Tuesday 28 July
Some of the finest examples of New Zealand Heritage Art will be offered for sale in the Important, Early & Rare auction to be held Tuesday 28 July. Three early watercolours by Colonel Robert Henry Wynyard are complimented by a rare and unusual photograph album by the Burton Brothers, Frank Coxhead and Josiah Martin. Highlights of importance include a major Goldie "The Aristocrat' held in a vault in Wellington for nearly forty years together with C.F. Goldie's only known self portrait, an exceptionally fine pair of Maori portraits by Gottfried Lindauer, each painting a major work in its own right and an early, rare work of Blind Chief of Otawao known as 'Blind Solomon' by Joseph J Merret .
Of great interest are fourteen topographical paintings from the Estate of Sir James Fletcher. Sir James has long been acknowledged as one of this country's pre-eminent collectors and it is privilege to offer works by Nicholas Chevalier, Alfred Sharpe, Christopher Aubrey, Frank Wright, Rev. John Kinder, John Gully and C D. Barraud from his personal collection. Early and rare lithographs, a Maori Declaration of Independence along with a Waiheke Island land document concerning the sale of Cabbage Tree Bay by Chiefs and people of the Ngatipare Ngatitamatera tribe add variety and interest to the sale. Works by Norman Wilkinson, Albin Martin, Charles Blomfield, J P Backhouse, Patrick J Hogan, H G Robley, James Peele, J B C Hoyte, John Gibb, Edward Fristrom, James N Nairn endorse the quality of offerings associated with the Important, Early and Rare sales.
The category of Modern and 20th century paintings continues to be well represented with never before seen works by artists such as Felix Kelly, John Weeks, Edward Bullmore, Evelyn Page, Sydney Lough Thompson, several Garth Tapper including a delightful work from his Public Bar series, resurfaced after 35 years, Michael Smither's Doralto Road, five works by Toss Woollaston, a rare self portrait by Ronald Jorgenson, a Colin McCahon scroll along with a major painting of great intricacy by the late Buck Nin.
