Garth Tapper - New Art Auction Record Tue, 17 Apr 2007
A significant new auction record was set for a work by Garth Tapper at our auction last month
'Musician Puhoi' fetched a record price at our 27 March auction. Estimated at $25,000 - 35,000 the painting attracted a number of keen bidders eventually selling for $37,000 ($41,995 incl premium) - over $10,000 more than the previous record set for a work by Garth Tapper in 2004.
Garth Tapper (1927 - 1999) is best known for his figurative works of 'typical Kiwis'. His works are regarded as a commentary on New Zealand life. Gum diggers, roadside workers, court room scenes and Puhoi pub patrons, as seen in 'Musician' feature predominately in his paintings.
Garth Tapper was born in the Waikato and studied at Elam School of Fine Arts from 1945 to 1951. In his final year he was invited by Director A. J. Fisher to lecture in painting. During this time he was awarded the Carnegie Scholarship from the Auckland Society of Arts. The scholarship later enabled him to study in Europe between 1952 and 1953. Whilst at the Slade and Chelsea Schools of Art he was influenced by fellow artists Augustus John and Vivian Pitchforth.
Tapper returned to New Zealand in 1954 and taught in Auckland until 1960, when he rejoined the staff at the Elam School of Fine Arts. He lectured there for 17 years before retiring in 1977 to paint full time.
