This work is part of a series encapsulating a turbulent period of New Zealand history. The British soldier depicted in this work is a representative of the shilling-a-day British soldier who marched with General Cameron from Ngaruawahia into the Waikato in 1863. Vivid with the verdant green of Waikato and redolent of the British love of uniform, the British soldier is the apposite of Tangata Whenua, The Challenge sold by International Art Centre, July 2008. General Cameron posed the question What are we doing here? Other paintings in this series - Integrated at Last, Christchurch Art Gallery collection, and Post Colonial Venus, Private collection, depict the outcome.
