This is one of the last paintings produced by Thornley in the period immediately before he began his work on the Constructions which were to occupy him for the next nine years. In its clear separation of two sharply contrasted colours it bears a close resemblance to some of the early constructions except that in this case the work is painted on a single canvas held within a frame. This is a transitional work in which the artist is moving towards a new style.
