The river valley in this scene has the lowest rainfall in New Zealand but that doesn't stop the frost. We had parked our caravan across the river and awoke in the morning to fields of white. Here, in a promise of warmth, the early morning sun begins to light the cliffs in a golden glow. The Maoris must have come here in the old days, as Manuherikia means a tethered bird, and the river's name is derived from the way their scouts had of marking a river crossing by tethering a bird beside it.
