Looking up the Kaituna River from near Havelock a window opened in the distant clouds and for a moment I glimpsed Tapuaenuku (2885m) in the Inland Kaikoura's. There was a sense of separation, not only of distance but also of time as I remembered making a winter ascent in 1956.
