The Heroes Return is a work from Moffitt's My Father's Life series. Comprising 139 paintings, Moffitt charted his father's life through a series of personal vignettes. Simultaneously mundane and profound, these works are deeply personal, but also reflect universal experiences - the complex relationship of a man with his father, the cycle of loss and grief and the fear of growing old and losing independence. John Coley in an article published in the Christchurch Star wrote on the series stating; Moffitt, in rediscovering Dad, is reinventing an authentic Kiwi working class hero.
