Matiatia, known as the Gateway to Waiheke, is located at the western end of the island in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf. The name is given to the surrounding hills and valley which stretches down to a foreshore and the wharf. For centuries Matiatia Bay has been the landing place for travellers in the Hauraki Gulf - from Maori waka to ocean-going yachts and commuter ferries. Lawrence Leitch captures land, sea and sky with detailed perfection. From transparent waters in the foreground, to rays of diffused light reflecting through native bush and Matiatia's icon red shearing shed, this is an excellent example of the artist's work.
