This work is part of a series of adaptations from the Fayum mummy portraits. Fayum portraits are an ancient tradition of naturalistic, painted wooded panels, often representing the upper class mummies from Roman Egypt. This beautiful woman in red has a crown of gold, with genuine gold leaf incorporated into the cloisonné process. Her crown, elegant dress, and demeanor reflecting her status. Scholars write that ancient Egyptians believed these portraits were necessary to help the gods identify them in the afterlife. The cloisonné enamel technique delivers a lustrously permanent image in glass and copper. A fitting medium to pay respect to these beautiful women of antiquity.
