Artemis was one of the most revered goddesses of ancient Greece. In myth and literature she is goddess of the hunt and the forest, nature, children and animals. Daughter of Zeus and twin to Apollo, she roamed the forest with her entourage of nymphs. She is a patron of motherhood, and healing, particularly among women and children. She is known as the protector of young girls. This cloisonné enamel work is made on a copper base, with copper wire. Many layers of enamel are fired in the kiln to build up a lustrous, jewel-like art work, that will hold its beauty through the centuries.
