November auction - Outstanding results across the board Thu, 28 Nov 2013
International Art Centre's November 20th Important, Early & Rare auction will be remembered for a record price for a work by Charles Frederick Goldie, his earliest Maori Portrait - Kawhena, 1892 - a truly rare National Treasure which sold for $732,800 - which itself is a also record for a painting sold at auction in New Zealand. International Art Centre now comfortably holds the record for a painting sold at auction in New Zealand. Our recent sale of Charles F Goldies 'Forty Winks' for $573,000 - was the second highest price paid at auction since 1995. But whilst these prices were achieved for New Zealand's most sought after artist, other works fared well at our auction last week. The works of the late Sir Peter Siddell have been attracting a lot of attention lately since our record price for one of his works in 2012 - 'Opening' which made $218,000. Last weeks auction saw four of the five works sell for just under $300,000, the highest price being $170,000 for 'Two Palms'. 'Western Gardens' painted in 1989 went for $76,200.
A lot of the top end auction results these days make the headlines - but it should be noted that some lesser works of excellent quality also attract attention. Archibald Frank Nicolls 'Peninsula Winter' painted circa 1932, carried an estimate of $2,000 - 3,000 - after numerous bids, some seven absentee bids in total, a buyer on the telephone secured it for $6,900. It has been noted post auction that Archibald Nicoll has been described as New Zealand's best painter of snow. A beautifully executed watercolour by Olivia Spencer Bower also attracted a lot of attention - never before seen on the auction market, the 40 x 57cm watercolour titled 'Kaikoura Country' sold for $9,380. Peter McIntyre's 'Whangarei' was keenly sought after - it went for $25,200 - with an estimate of $15,000 - 20,000. International Art Centre is the worlds leading auction house for works by this artist, still holding the auction record of $54,000 for a work sold a few years ago.
A rare work by Johannes Geradus Keulemans made $23,450 and a lovely Frances Hodgkins drawing went for $25,795. Results were fairly consistent through the sale with much of the action happening on the night, 70% of the 120 Lot offering sold for a total of $1.6 million, topping off another fabulous year at International Art Centre and our best result for 2013.
Post auction sales included a small but lovely Goldie which sold for $187,000 and the Pink & White Terrace sample's at $15,800.
