- International Art Centre's Important, Early & Rare auction wrapped up well last week - top price was $190,000 for a never before seen Goldie in exceptional condition - $22,000 was bid for John Week's 'Two Nudes' against a catalogued estimate of $8,000 - 12,000. Four other John Weeks fared well in the sale and a record $29,000 was bid for a Christopher Perkins. A small but delightful work by the late Sir Peter Siddell made $20,500 and two Peter McIntyre oils fetched $20,000 each. Post auction sales include the cover lot by Frances Hodgkins. Prices quoted exclude buyers premium.
- A colourful selection of works by Milano based Paolo Canetti are currently on view in the gallery. This collection ranges from small paintings to three large scale works featuring the landscape and inhabitants of Southern Italy and Tuscany, portrayed in the unique style of Canetti.
- Brian Dahlberg's third painting from the St Stephen's Chapel series sold within 24 hours of being hung. It looked magnificent in our main gallery window, eliciting inquiries and interest from passing motorist and foot traffic alike.
- The next auction is shaping up to be a highly interesting offering - catalogue goes to print this week - Collectable & Contemporary Art 6:00pm Thursday 8th December is our final auction for 2011. Catalogue available and online from 25th November. A great sale for new or existing collectors alike, something for everyone. - Auckland Holy Trinity are holding an event called Just Like Antiques Roadshow between 5pm-8pm on Saturday 3rd December at the Selwyn Library in Parnell. You are invited to bring in old paintings and antiques at that time. Richard Thomson of Internatonal Art Centre has been asked to value the paintings - surprise him with a nice Goldie or something special! Cathedral website
- Australian artist David Boyd died in Sydney last week aged 87. A painter and ceramicist, Boyd was awarded an OAM for his services to art, which included the development of ground-breaking glazing techniques.
- Roy Lichtenstein's 'I Can See the Whole Room! ... and There's Nobody In It!' fetched a record US$43.2million at Christies New York last week - Sothebys and Christies both held major sales with spectacular results. Marc Porter, chairman of Christie's Americas was quoted as saying 'The financial markets have been volatile all year, yet the art market has continued to perform well. It's incredibly strong.' A digital photograph titled "Rhein II" by Andreas Gursky executed in 1999 fetched US$4.3million. The work exceeded expectations to sell in the $2.5 to $3.5 million range and fetched a record for a photograph.
