Thorne Bay located north of Auckland's Takapuna Beach may be accessed via a scenic coastal walkway. This secluded little beach with its white sand and clear water is a favourite amongst locals and visitors in-the-know. During low tide water trickles down from Lake Pupuke to a fresh water rock pool at the Southern end of the beach, providing a welcome natural watering spot. Thorne Bay is named after William Thorne (1847 - 1911) who built his holiday home there in the 1880's. Thorne was the son of early Auckland settlers and became a well-regarded solicitor and local politician based in Ponsonby.
