An Auckland Collection Wed, 16 May 2018
The sale attracted a lot of interest and resulted in a significant new art auction record for Contemporary artist Heather Straka, $34,000, the second significant New Zealand art auction record for a Contemporary work is as many months. Last month saw the $82,500 bid for a Karl Maughan. The Auckland collector who consigned 82 works left happy with many of his works finding new homes and some top prices paid and the remaining 66 lots saw some great results. A small Jeffrey Harris Self Portrait, estimated at $4,000 - 6,000 saw numerous bids in the room and telephone bidders, pushing the price to $16,000. An Alexander Calder screen print 'ABC' was knocked down for $3,600 while a Toss Woollaston portrait in watercolour made $3,000 and an oil $17,000. We are seeing good demand for Woollaston, with a work making the third highest price in history at the Sally Hunt Collection in November 2017 ($110,000) and 'Mapua' last month fetching $142,000, the second highest price in history. It was encouraging to see such demand after the big $4million dollar auction held in April.
